EGE BAMYASI was my co-host, Dallas’ pick. If you’ve never listened to a CAN album before…well, you’re about to hear some weird shit, that’s for sure.
The group was founded in the late 60’s and went through many vocalists, but it was the three albums between 1971-1973 with Japanese vocalist Damo Suzuki that continues to change lives to this very day.
“Ege Bamyasi” is the middle album of those three.
“Ege Bamyasi” is Turkish for “Aegean Okra.” For that matter, “Can” is Turkish for “Life.” And no, no one in the band is Turkish.
Lyrics are often improvised on the spot, by a man who spoke English as his third language. Instrumentals push at multiple boundaries and were sometimes equally as improvised on the spot.
The final track on the album, “Spoon”, is where the band Spoon took their name.
