What Are We Drinking 12-3-2024

Dave's Final WSET 3 Classes (gulp!) and Dallas' Rosemary Brandy "Tincture"

TWO WEEKS UNTIL MY WSET LEVEL 3 EXAM! AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

Today we talk about my recent auto accident, and how this led us to decompress (but do the opposite of detox :P) at a local L.A. wine bar we love and highly recommend, Curated Wine Shop, founded and run by someone who passed the WSET Lvl 3 last year from my same teacher! It was a Thursday evening and a bunch of distributors came by to do some tastings and the owners roped us into trying them all as we were the only sad sack assholes there. It was a lot of wine, all night long (as Lionel Richie would sing.)

Special shout out to PRIMITIVE WINES who were my personal fave wines I tasted that night. Based in Paso Robles and the Central Coast, their “Smoke Signals” (100% Malbec) was just phenomenal. It was too high ABV for Dallas, though I thought it was balanced and the alcohol didn’t stick out. And at only 14.8%, frankly, any red wine from Paso under 15% is keeping the alcohol under control.

Anywho, needless to say, we were wined out the next day, but already had tickets to the GROWN IN L.A. event where there were “30 hand crafted, small production wines, representing numerous vineyards from Malibu, Bel Air, Santa Clarita, Antelope Valley, San Bernardino and more.”

Then I worked the Blending Lab winery on Saturday, then had my WSET class Sunday morning where we sipped wine 9:30am - 4:30pm. Whoof. Welcome to being a wine professional? (And I’m only semi-professional still! Ack.)

Anywho, Dallas was smart and actually detoxed after this wild weekend with a homemade Rosemary & Brandy “tincture” which he adds to Ginger Ale in small doses. Recipe below! (note it takes 5 weeks to make! So patience/plan ahead!)

And here are the full sheets of my WSET wines as discussed in the video above:

I’ve got 13 more days until the exam! Wish me luck!
