Folks, I can safely say - without hyperbole - that artist
blew me away with the work he has posted here on Substack over the previous year. When I heard he was working on a new Toxic Avenger comic book, set to be released th first week of October, I knew I had to have him come on the show and talk about it!Fred has a background in fine art, caricature art, editorial art, mural art, and more, but he always comes back to comics, baby. The new Toxic Avenger is written by fellow Substacker
and the two are putting together something seriously special.PRE-ORDERS are super-important for comics, so if you can conisder it, and love what you see on Fred’s substack and/or in the previews, consider pre-ordering the first issue in either of these two places:
USA EAST COAST:
USA WEST COAST:
Both places will ship anywhere in the States, and/or go to a local comic shop and let them know you want this! They will pre-order it for you, in fact they’ll even do so for the entire 5-issue series, and have them all waiting for you as they’re released.

Paid Subscriber Shout Out!
We give a shout out on the pod to new paid subscriber
- Paul is the founder of the OG Wine of the Month Club dating back to 1972 (!)Paul also hosts his own podcast, Talks With Paul K. His latest episode, that just dropped TODAY, is all about a winery out of Missouri you all need on your radar - TerraVox Winery is not only in a State you’d least expect to find a winery, but it almost solely focuses on wines made from native American grapes. You haven’t heard of half thee grapes, and the wines are starting to win awards and get accolades by wine writers and critics. TerraVox is going to be a big piece of America’s wine future, and I for one am chomping at the bit to try their wines out!!!
We also gave a belated shout out to
of who became a paid subscriber a while back. Kate guested on the show already, on two of our most watched episodes to date, covering the electronic Argentinian tango album GOTAN PROJECT. If you haven’t listened to those episodes yet, you are depriving yourself of a seriously incredible music find!THE WINES (and Tequila!)
Okay, let’s get to the wines - and one smooooooth tequila - that we paired with today’s movie, THE TOXIC AVENGER!
Fred’s Tequila
Fred described this and smooth and clean with no need for mixing it or needing a chaser. (But drink water anyway, folks! It’s good for you!) Aged for seven months in American white oak casks that have been reconditioned after originally being used for premium-aged whiskey.
Casamigos is George Clooney’s tequila brand, and he’s one of the rare celebrities that’s actually serious about putting his name on these things!
Dallas’ Wine
Gérard Bertrand Trouble XP Blanc “Cloudy Wine”
You just knew one of us had to got he “natty” route when pairing with Toxic Avenger! Note that “Trouble XP Cloudy Wine” comes in white, rose, and red, Dallas specifically paired the white/blanc.
This is a Natural wine from former Rugby player and man behind the power house cote de roses: Gerard Bertrand. Unfined, unfiltered, organic farming, hand harvested grapes coming from in and around the Languedoc. 60% Chardonnay, 20% Grenache Blanc, 20% Viognier Intense tropical fruit with high acidity and a bit of a gritty mouthfeel. Lychee, guava, pineapple and blood orange pith. Challenging, as most natural wines, are, but overall pleasant - it’s well made and suprisingly nice to consume. And that sentence described the Toxic Avenger movie to a “T” as in “Trouble”!
Dave’s Wine
Domaine Haut Bridau Picpoul de Pinet
Picpoul de Pinet has been making the rounds on Substack of late! I won’t pretend to know much about the grape or the region, save for the fact that I love them. You can read a full write up of Picpoul de Pinet by main man
here:“Picpoul” means “lip stinger” in French, named such due to its bracing acidity. This Haut Bridau was (and I can’t believe I’m typing this) disappointingly balanced - it was too gentle, not enough bracing going on! It’s absolutely lovely, but for TOXIC AVENGER I would recommend finding a Picpoul that has a stronger, cleansing, acid attack just like th etoxic chemicals that turn our hero into a toxic monstronsity.
For that I’d more recommend Bonny Doon’s Picpoul from the Central Coast of California.
This bad boy has acidity to spare. It is a lip stinger and a lip smacker for sure. Massive lemon and minerals on the palate. You feel CLEAN after sipping. Perfect to counter the gross-out effect of the Toxic Avenger movie!
Botht he Haut Bridau (for those who want balanced) and the Bonny Doon (for those you want sharpity sharp sharp) are around $15 - $20 / bottle, and readily available in major wine stores such as Total Wine, BevMo, K&L, etc.
Which would you drink, do you think?
