Today we tackle the just-released ALIEN: ROMULUS, the 7th entry in the Alien franchise, directed by Fede Alvarez and written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues - both Uruguayan filmmakers known for DON’T BREATHE (2016) and EVIL DEAD (2013).
We discuss the film with special guest BRYANT DILLON, President and co-founder of Fanbase Press, the GLAAD Media Award-winning and Eisner and Harvey Awards-nominated comic book publisher and geek culture website. Bryant hosts his own weekly podcast, The Fanbase Weekly, which can be found, much like ours, wherever fine podcasts are cast, and on fanbasepress.com
Fanbase Press is celebrating its upcoming 15th Anniversary with the launch of its very first Kickstarter for a Deluxe Hardcover Edition of Jordan Hart and Bruno Chiroleu's RIPPLE EFFECT, the Eisner and Harvey Award-nominated series about a superhero with an invisible disability. THE WINES (and Not-Wines)
Dave’s Wine
2020 Marichal Reserve Collection Tannat, Canelones, Uruguay
Tannat is one of the great age-worthy, intense red wines of the world. A French grape - usually reserved for blending purposes only in France - that has found a home in Uruguay where it is the national grape!
Aged for 12 months in 70% new oak barrels, this is still a young wine with rough edges to spare, but as I say in the podcast - "drink 'em young!" The intensity and rough edges are why it pairs so well with Romulus! Plus filmmakers Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues are both of Uruguayan descent.
DALLAS' WINE
Kleine Draken Pinotage Paarl 2022
Located on the Western Cape of South Africa - Paarl and surrounding areas. Cold wet winters and hot dry summers. Vineyards situated on the warmer western slopes. Fermented on skins 12 to 18 days after which the skins are pressed and inoculated with malolactic bacteria to initiate a 2nd fermentation. Then the wine is filtered and stabilized prior to bottling.
Bright ruby red in color (which suggests good acidity!) Medium bodied with well balanced tannins and the telltale Pinotage burnt rubber/leather note. An intense red for an intense movie!
BRYANT'S NOT-WINE
Lo-Carb Monster Energy Drink
According to the Monster website:
"Monster Energy Lo-Carb packs a powerful punch and has a smooth, easy-drinking flavor, but without glucose. Get the big bad Monster buzz you know and love, but with a sweet & salty citrus twist with a fraction of the carbohydrates and only 30 calories per can and with 140mg of Caffeine."
Part of Bryant's childhood, and a drink he associates with the franchise and also, frankly, Monster is missing out on insane branding opportunities by not having drinks for every Alien flick, every Predator flick, every kaiju flick, etc. Monster - get on that shit!!!
