Wine and...Comics: The Adventures of Luther Arkwright by Bryan Talbot

10 years in the making and considered the first ever British graphic novel, it ushered in a Golden Age for British *and* American comics.
1

Finally, our first comic!

We front-loaded the show with movies and albums (and honestly, those are the easiest to consume at a quick pace, so likely that will always be the case) but we’re finally here with our first graphic novel, and it’s the OG British graphic novel of all time!

THE ADVENTURES OF LUTHER ARKWRIGHT is an insanity of riches, both its detail-rich art and its rule-defying storytelling. It ushered in a new era of British comics that continued well into the 80’s and 90’s and even over to America, where DC’s Vertigo line brought over Neil Gaiman for SANDMAN, Alan Moore for SWAMP THING, Grant Morrison for ANIMAL MAN and DOOM PATROL, Jamie Delano for HELLBLAZER, Peter Milligan for SHADE THE CHANGING MAN, etc,

Heavily inspired by Michael Moorcock’s JERRY CORNELIUS novels, Luther Arkwright soon evolved into its own beast of a literary work, and reading it today is an eye-opening experience, regarding how much of a roadmap it was/is for boundary-pushing comics even to this day, including the works of Grant Morrison, Jamie McKelvie, Matt Fraction, James Tynion IV, Jonathan Hickman, and more.

The Wines

Dave's Wine

M. Chapoutier 2012 Banyuls Traditionnel
Grenache-based Ruby Port-style wine from the Southern Roussillon region in the Rhone. 8% residual sugar, fortified with brandy for a 16% ABV.  Medium-intense notes of black plum, currant and cherry with supporting tones of wood spice and fudge. Tannins have mellowed considerably in this 2012 vintage, with full black-fruit flavors that linger long on the close.

The Banyuls is sweet and packs a punch in every sip with a looooong finish. You only need a small sip every 5-10 minutes, perfectly for losing yourself in the density of the Luther Arkwright story.

Back-up Wine:
La Vielle Ferme Red 2021
GSM/Rhone style blend but Cinsault and Carignan heavy, rather than Grenache, so it's merely labeled a “red wine of France”. Light on its feet with plenty of fruit flavors and layers of fresh green herbs. A perfect everyday country wine, undemanding, so your focus can be on the book, yet complex enough to compliment.

Dallas’ Wine

Denny Bini Frizzante dell'Emilia Buzza
Made from the Spergola and Malvasia di Candia Aromatica grapes, Spergola carries historical reference as the choice bev of powerful noblewomen during the High and Late Middle Ages. Centuries later, it has captured the hearts and minds of Emilia’s bottle-fermented wine pundits and is championed by Denny Bini.

Direct press and fermented in stainless steel tanks, without temperature control. The second fermentation happens in the bottle in the spring and it takes place within 30 to 60 days and adding must from the same vintage.
