Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, You Glorious, Garrulous Geeks!
Whether you're part of the nerdyard that is the wine world, and/or the dork tower that is the comics world, we thank you for reading our ridiculous ramblings.
Taking a moment to post this before the holiday weekend. And I of course want to say:
Thank You
As of this week, The Wine and Comics Pairing Show and this Substack are exactly 1 year old!
We started very slow, posting an episode maybe once a month (if that!) Then we started to get our schedules in order and posted on a semi-regular basis starting in March of this year. We garnered just enough interest that creators from the comics world inquired if they could come on as guests.
Well, that was only about 4 months ago, and in that very short span of time we’ve done 10 shows plus 14 Livestreams with guest stars! Whew!
This Substack has seen steady subscriber growth as well, a steady trickle that keeps on ticking up every week, and I get GIDDY every time I see a new email/profile sign up, whether from the wine world or the comics world. (And there’s plenty from both.)
So What’s Next?
Oh, folks, so much. So, soooooo much. We’ve now got a steady stream of comics guests, but that’s only ONE HALF of the title on this concept. We have plans to bring on guests from the wine world in 2024. We have plans to have both comics and wine guests on simultaneously. It’s actually been the master plan all along. More on that very soon.
Wine and…
We also plan to expand beyond comics. I don’t want to say too much on this quite yet, we have some work to do first. But likely this evolution will also occur in 2024. Music, movies, tv shows, short films, books, and, of course, comics. Forever, there will be comics.
We’re Also Becoming a Publisher
We hinted at this in a previous post, but our very first comic under our own brand is coming in January. It will be the first of many. More on this in December.
One More Livestream Before Turkey Day!
Join us TONIGHT at 5pm PT / 8pm ET for one more Livestream with Travis Gibb where we talk about my favorite comic from Travis (and it’s Travis’ favorite from himself as well!) GRANITE STATE PUNK. Punk rock ethos and black magic wildness combine for a strangely intimate, personal story dressed in the trappings of the "fuck you” and the supernatural.
I found a pretty “fuck you” and wild wine to pair with it, too. Find out which one this evening!
Thanksgiving Recommendations
First off, let me mention the two foods I’m preparing this year.
The first is from
at :I LOVE cranberries!
I made two batches of this one: the first one I made as directed, a true chutney with no additional sugar added (just the slight sweetness from the orange juice). The second I added two tablespoons of sugar to make it just sweet enough to snack on all by itself. Did I mention I LOVE cranberries? Well, I do. :)
The second dish is a dessert, a Dark Chocolate Chess Pie per the NYT Cooking section. This sounds like just the kind of bittersweet pie I’m going to love at the end of the day. I’ll be baking this tomorrow, so no pics of my own yet, but here’s the NYT stock photo of it:
But Which Wines Will I Be Drinking?
NV Henri Champliau Cremant de Bourgogne Rose Burgundy France
Can’t go wrong with sparkling! Especially a rose sparkling! Which is incredibly versatile in pairing with food. I't’s lightly fruity, refreshing (not too heavy!) with a backbone of tart hibiscus or cranberry flavor.
Vignobles Lacheteau Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie AOP ($7.99 at Trader Joe’s!)
Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine is a perfect all-pupose white, always crisp with just the right amount of acidity, citrus, and strong minerality. And always affordable, too. Made from the “melon” grape, I love this region/brand of white.
Most will look to Pinot Noir for a light bodied red, but Pais is my new Pinot. A bit lighter in color and flavor with gentler tannins than Pinot. Plus the “Salvaje” version, made from wild grown vines, lends a extra dimension of earthy, herbasceous notes that match with pretty much anything savory or sweet.
Vinha da Fonte Riserva Portuguese Red Blend ($7.99 at Trader Joe’s!)
This is my go-to budget red right now. Portugal is, in 2023, the best bang for your buck region, period. This is a 5-grape blend of Cab Sauv, Castelao, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, and Alicante Bouchet. It’s young, fresh, vibrant, a garnet/brick hued red with wonderful red fruit flavors, high acidity, well integrated tannins, and florals up the nose/through the roof. Best bargain buy I know of right now.
Happy Turkey Day / Day of Thanks, y’all! I hope you and yours stay safe, enjoy whatever time you get together, and no life is good for at least one gd weekend. Is that too much to ask?
And we’ll see y’all here next week :) Take care.
Thanks for trying my recipe!! And yes- always can add sugar the port and OJ for me gives it enough sweetness but I like it tart so I love when people add their own way of making it their own!
