Christie Shinn and Demon Bitch: Gross Characters and Gross Wine
Christie has been an ambassador for underground "comix", fellow artists, and she has been BUSY, people. And she drinks like a fish.
Christie Shinn is an incredibly busy and prolific comics creator. Her ongoing strip "Demon Bitch" is now on Kickstarter with its SEVENTH graphic novel collection. All seven are available, plus a Demon Bitch kid's book!
Um...yeah, that's a real thing.
Christie is also developing a video game based on Demon Bitch, she’s President of the Comic Arts Professional Society (CAPS), organizer of Asian Invasion events, and publisher of Kumio Productions and more and more and more.

The Wines We Paired With Demon Bitch
DAVE’S WINE:
I thought you could go one of three ways with the grossness of Demon Bitch:
Something super clean and crisp, a white like Torrontes or Fiano or Erbaluce or Muscadet Sevre et Maine. Even New Zealand Sauv Blanc would do. Something to contrast the, erm, ripeness of the comic.
Something unpleasant and unenjoyable, like Three-Buck Chuck (it ain’t two bucks anymore, kids), or Boon Farms, or Sutter Home. You get the gist.
But ultimately I went with something in-between: NATTY WINE. Not just “natural”, but NATTY. Natural wine can be super-interesting and delicious when made well, but “Natty” wine, imo, is the overly funky stuff. Not quite as unpleasant as the dirt cheap bulk crappola. But difficult to enjoy regardless. Spontaneously fermented with wild yeasts, unfiltered and unfined, plus plenty of skin contact. I generally quite like Pali Wine out of Santa Barbara. But their natural stuff is pretty hit or miss:
DALLAS’ WINE:
Dallas isn’t the biggest fan of Sangiovese - (I KNOW!!!) - but, sigh, everyone’s palette is their own, even when they’re broken. So he chose an 80% Sangio, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon Tosacano IGT blend. It’s a fairly affordable one, so likely not the cream of the Super Tuscan crop. He said it was a bit harsh and difficult to love, though frankly it sounds delicious to me:

Meanwhile, Christie spotlighted a number of incredible-looking OOP Fantagraphics books that no one can buy because she's a bitch like that.
You can go look but not touch by going to:
And she paired it with a wine that also isn't available for anyone to buy anymore, but on this point we should all thank her:

Funnily, Christie mentions in the video that the label was going for a “Blair Witch kind of thing” with the images on the bottle. Those are of course different kinds of grapevine trellises, but in sketchy black and white they do indeed look like spooky Blair Witch iconography!
Okay, th-th-th-that’s all for this one, folks! Go check out Christie’s Kickstarter, and make sure you check out all of our recent Livestreams we’ve been posting! Two more coming next week!
